This is a plate-style engine oil cooler that uses engine coolant to regulate the temperature of the engine oil. It is mounted directly to the engine block, allowing coolant and oil to pass through separate chambers within the unit to facilitate efficient heat exchange, ensuring the oil remains at its optimal viscosity.
The primary failure of this cooler is internal seal degradation, which allows engine oil and coolant to mix. This contamination creates a milky, sludge-like substance in both the cooling system and the oil sump, severely compromising lubrication and cooling. External leaks can also occur from failed gaskets, leading to loss of oil or coolant.
