This component is a timing chain guide rail, specifically the lower left guide for the primary timing chain. It is a fixed plastic rail that provides a smooth, low-friction surface for the timing chain to run against, preventing slack and ensuring the chain remains correctly aligned on its path between sprockets.
The plastic guide surface can wear down over time from friction with the chain. In a bad state, pieces of the plastic can break off, falling into the oil pan and potentially blocking the oil pump pickup. A worn guide will cause chain noise (slapping or rattling). Complete failure of the guide can cause the chain to lose tension and jump time, resulting in major engine damage.
