This is the main timing chain tensioner. It uses hydraulic pressure from the engine oil, combined with an internal spring and mechanical ratchet system, to apply constant pressure to the timing chain guide rail. This action maintains the correct tension on the timing chain throughout the engine’s operating range.
This part is notorious for failure, particularly the internal ratchet mechanism. When the ratchet fails, the tensioner can retract when the engine is off and oil pressure is absent. Upon the next start-up, the chain is momentarily slack, which can be enough for it to jump time, causing catastrophic piston-to-valve contact. A rattling noise on start-up is a critical warning sign.
