The clock spring (also known as a spiral cable, contact reel, or rotary coupler) maintains a continuous electrical connection to steering wheel-mounted components including the horn, airbag, cruise control, and audio controls as the wheel rotates. Common symptoms of a faulty clock spring include an illuminated airbag or SRS warning light, non-functional horn, inoperative steering wheel controls, or intermittent airbag faults logged in the control module. Before replacing, confirm the fault using a VW/Audi compatible diagnostic scan tool — fault codes B1000, 01217, 01590, or airbag-related codes are typical indicators. Disconnect the battery and wait a minimum of 10 minutes before working near airbag components. The clock spring is located behind the steering wheel and requires removal of the airbag unit — always handle airbag components with care and follow OEM workshop procedures. Torque the steering wheel centre bolt to 50 Nm upon reinstallation. Clear all fault codes and verify functionality of all steering wheel controls and airbag system after fitment.
