This is a one-time-use M8x20mm Torx head bolt. These are torque-to-yield (TTY) or “stretch” bolts commonly used to secure components like belt tensioners or the engine oil pan. Their design ensures a very specific and even clamping force is achieved when torqued correctly.
These bolts are designed to permanently stretch when tightened to specification. Reusing a bolt will result in incorrect clamping force, as it will not torque down correctly a second time. This can lead to the component coming loose, causing oil or coolant leaks, or the bolt itself can fatigue and break under stress. They must be replaced whenever they are removed.
